Our training is designed for adults living with disabilities to help them become self- reliant and obtain meaningful employment. Our curriculum is Mentor Me to Be, a life skills and development program that utilizes community resources and mentorship. Lessons are delivered in game-like simulations. The only program, in West Michigan, to offer students the ability to graduate with ServSafe Certification.

Culinary & Hospitality workshop is a 6 week program meeting Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 9am – 3pm at Keystone Community Church 655 Spaulding Ave SE. Participants will receive daily hands-on instruction. Upon completion, students will earn a 5 year ServSafe Manager certification.

Social Events.

A shocking 85% of young adults with disabilities, 18-34, feel lonely. (Scope, UK 2017) Perhaps you know this story well, from your own child, family member or yourself. At LoNia's World Center, we provide social events for young adults with disabilities, this creates opportunities to grow connections and friendships with people of all abilities.

Our quarterly events have included: New Years Party, Christmas Party, Pajama Jam,
Movies in the Park and dances.

Hospitality Certification.

In 2019, the unemployment rate for people with a disability is 7.3 percent for paid work. Their jobless rate continues to be about twice as high as the rate for those without a disability. Kent County has approximately 50,000 disabled adults, of which 30,000 are considered young adults. Many find themselves aging out of the education system devoid of employment opportunities.

Program Details

LoNia’s World Center is designed to provide entry culinary and hospitality training for adults living with disabilities to help them become self-reliant. In keeping with the vision statement of the organization, the program will focus on innovative ways to deliver services that are consistent with providing compassionate, quality, services in the hospitality industry. This program is designed to prepare participants to successfully join the hospitality industry aimed with the right skills to compete even with those without disability. 

Course curriculum begins basic cooking techniques as related to the culinary art.  Introduction to cooking utensils, kitchen equipment and culinary fundamentals along with rudiment of team work and delegation and communication in the kitchen introduces the primary module of learning. Pre-preparation, food preparation, packaging  and food photography explore culinary fundamentals.  Food and nutrition, time management and food costing  are addressed in the class. Practicum sessions include excursions to grocery stores, markets and restaurants.

Young adults with a disability taking part in this program will have the opportunity to undertake supported internships and gain hands on experience with further opportunity for paid employment in the hospitality industry all across West Michigan.
